Stephen Harper is a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of
Portsmouth, UK. His work focuses on media representations of health and
illness and their intersection with discourses of gender, race and
social class. He is also interested in British television, media history
and critical theory. Stephen has written about images of madness in a
variety of cultural texts, from medieval literature to contemporary film
and television and he is currently preparing a book on portrayals of
madness in contemporary film, television and print media. He can be
