Media empires: corporate structures and lines of control

Eileen R. Meehan

Eileen R. Meehan is a political economist specializing in media industries and commercial culture.  She is the author of Why TV Is Not Our Fault (Rowan & Littlefield, 2005).  Meehan has co-edited two books:  Sex and Money:  Feminism and Political Economy in Media Studies with Ellen Riordan and, with Janet Wasko and Mark Philips, Dazzled by Disney?:  The Global Disney Audiences Project. Meehan is a professor in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Her current research, exploring connections between media concentration and neoliberal policies, was partly inspired by The Yes Men (2003).  That documentary film follows the adventures of culture jammers Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonnano as they impersonate representatives of the World Trade Organization and deliver the “good news” of neoliberalism in stark and precise terms.  It’s a hoot!  (See the trailer on YouTube)
