Goodbye Germany: emigration, reality TV and Schadenfreude

 

Mattias Frey

Mattias Frey is Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK.

At present, he is finishing a book on the new understanding of national history in German film, to be entitled Goodbye Hitler: Postwall German Cinema and History (forthcoming with Berghahn Books). His numerous articles appear in a host of edited anthologies, reference works and journals such as Cinema Journal, Screen, Quarterly Review of Film and Video, Framework and Senses of Cinema. Previously, he reviewed movies for the Boston Phoenix.

His ongoing research concentrates on European cinema (with particular emphasis on German and Austrian film), historiography, matters of media reception and consumption, the history of ‘classical’ and contemporary film theory, movie criticism and cinephilia.
