Digital pleasure palaces: Bollywood seduces the global Indian at the multiplex

 

Manjunath Pendakur

Manjunath Pendakur grew up in India and worked in the film industry before emigrating to North America. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Economy of Communication from Simon Fraser University and taught film and media studies at Northwestern University for 18 years. His research interests in mass media have led him to conduct fieldwork in Canada, India, the US and Africa. His scholarly publications include Indian Popular Cinema: Industry, Ideology And Consciousness (Hampton Press, 2003), Canadian Dreams and American Control: The Political Economy of the Canadian Film Industry (Wayne State University Press, 1991), several book chapters, two co-edited books, and numerous journal articles. He is currently working on a book-length study of transformations in the village where he grew up in southern India.
