Erica Rand

Erica Rand teaches in Women and Gender Studies and in Art and Visual Culture at Bates College. Her writings include Barbie’s Queer Accessories (Duke, 1995), The Ellis Island Snow Globe (Duke, 2005) and Red Nails Black Skates: Gender, Cash, and Pleasure On and Off the Ice (Duke, 2012), grounded in participant-observation research in adult figure skating.  Her most recent essay, “Court and Sparkle: Kye Allums, Johnny Weir, and Raced Problems in Gender Authenticity,” appears in the Athletic Issue of GLQ (2013). She serves on the editorial board of the journals Criticism, Radical Teacher, and Salacious, where she frequently offers the Salacious Advice.
