Greg Youmans is Assistant Professor of English and Film Studies at Western Washington University. Much of his scholarship focuses on queer activist and experimental media. He is the author of Word Is Out: A Queer Film Classic (Vancouver: Arsenal Pulp Press, 2011) as well as articles about the films and videos of Chantal Akerman, Cary Cronenwett, Gary Fembot, and Barbara Hammer, among others, in Camera Obscura, e-flux, Found Footage, and Millennium Film Journal. He recently contributed a chapter about lesbian poet Elsa Gidlow (1898–1986) to the collection Out of the Closet, Into the Archives: Researching Sexual Histories, ed. Amy L. Stone and Jaime Cantrell (Albany: SUNY Press, 2015) and another about Rosa von Praunheim’s 1979 film Army of Lovers, or Revolt of the Perverts to the collection Porno Chic and the Sex Wars: American Sexual Representation in the 1970s, ed. Carolyn Bronstein and Whitney Strub (Amherst and Boston: University of Massachusetts Press, 2016). Youmans is currently working on a book about queer filmmaking in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1970s. As a videomaker, he made the episodic project Falling in Love…with Chris and Greg in collaboration with Chris E. Vargas from 2008 to 2013.
