Catherine Clepper is a doctoral student in the Screen Cultures program at Northwestern University. She received her masters degree from Northwestern (also in Screen Cultures) in 2006. Catherine’s research interests include film theory, intersections of gender and film, Hollywood history, cultural histories of sensory perception, and failed technological innovations. She also watches a lot of Food Network (or at least she did when she had cable). She has forthcoming book reviews in Film Criticism and Scope. In relation to her essay, she finds Jean Marc Roc's review of The Hypersexuality of Race (posted on the book's Amazon item page) pretty hilarious. Roc defends his film(s) against Shimuzu's criticism of by chronicling his anthropological training — and direct intellectual descendancy from Franz Boas.
