Kathleen Rowe Karlyn

Kathleen Rowe Karlyn is the author of the award-winning The Unruly Woman: Gender and the Genres of Laughter (Texas, 1995) and Unruly Girls, Unrepentant Mothers¬† (Texas, 2011), as well as articles in Screen, Cinema Journal, Genders, Feminist Media Studies and other publications. Before becoming an academic, she worked as a newspaper reporter and editor, an experience that taught her the virtues of writing engaging prose on deadline. She spent her academic career at the University of Oregon, where she pursued her interests in feminist theory, cultural studies and genre. She spent her last years at Oregon launching and directing its new program in Cinema and Media Studies and retired as Professor Emerita in 2013. She is now living in Philadelphia close to her family on the East Coast, and pursuing activities she didn’t have much time for when she was working full time: traveling, learning to play jazz piano, and continuing to dance Argentine tango whenever and wherever she can, here and abroad.¬†
