JUMP CUT
A REVIEW OF CONTEMPORARY MEDIA

Notes

1. Ramlila is a theatrical performance of the Ramayana, depicting the life of Rama; it serves as both a cultural spectacle and a medium for reinforcing Hindu identity and mythology. [return to page 1]

2. Mandal Commission Report recommended an affirmative action policy i.e. reservation for more than half of Indian population categorised as ‘backward castes’. Backward caste politicians demanded and secured the implication of this policy in 1990 during V.P. Singh’s tenure, which was met with protests and extreme hostility by the ‘forward castes’. Some 130 ‘forward caste’ individuals self-immolated to protest the affirmative action policy. Such development furthered the forward versus backward castes discourse, also known as the feud of Mandal and Kamandal whereby Kamandal is a symbol of Hindutva politics advocating for religious polarization as opposed to social justice politics of Mandal Commission. [return to page 2]

3. Puja is a ritualistic act of devotion in Hinduism where flowers, incense, and prayers are offered to deities, in temples and homes.

4. Hindu Rashtra is the vision of India as a Hindu nation, promoted by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its political affiliate, the Bharatiya Janata Party (B.J.P). It contrasts with India's constitutional secularism and is central to debates on nationalism, majoritarianism, and pluralism.
